Enter the Refracted World

  • Believe in yourself
In four days, I will be standing up in front of a live audience at the biggest arts festival in the world! I can’t say I’m not nervous – but now, after months of preparation, I am ready and excitement is starting to replace those pesky nerves. To stand on a stage at the Edinburgh Fringe is something most performers aspire to achieve in their lifetime. When the pandemic ripped through the world, live entertainment …

  • Happy Pride Month!
Hello gorgeous sapiens! It’s Pride Month which means thirty days of colour all around the world. Even now, I love seeing the rainbow flag – I guess that’s why I painted one on our living room wall as a landscape scene! If you haven’t seen it, I’ll attach a picture for you. I’ve been working incredibly hard on my play these past few months. Everything stopped while we were renovating the house and it was …

  • Distractions
It’s strange how the house swallowed up all of my brain power. I had a few days a week at the flat when I could rest and theoretically write, but I couldn’t. Every time I tried, it was the house I was thinking about and what I was writing was total rubbish. This week has been the first time in three months I can actually sit here and write without (m)any distractions. For the past …

  • You are Not Normal
And that’s a good thing! I enjoy watching documentaries, real life lore and learning new things in easy-to-understand bite-size chunks. Today I watched a video from TED-Ed. If you’ve not seen their YouTube channel before, you should check it out as it has some fantastic videos, most only 5 minutes in length. Their latest video asks: What is “normal” and what is “different”? It’s a question I – and I’m sure many others – have …

  • Poetry for the half asleep
I’m writing poetry again. Until recently, I hadn’t written poetry since my late teens. Twenty years has passed me by and my love of reading and writing poetry seemed to dwindle into a distant memory. It was only after writing the poem for my Christmas newsletter that I started again. I’m very much a night owl. My brain doesn’t fully engage in a morning – that’s always been the case for me – and so …

  • From Wordle to Knittens?
I randomly saw a post of Twitter the other week, a series of grey, yellow and green blocks stacked on one another. What is that? I asked the tweeted and they simply responded: Wordle. What is Wordle? A quick Google search took me straight there and I that was it. I was hooked. Ever since then, I can’t seem to escape it. It’s everywhere, everyone is talking about, my newsfeed is 50% Wordle articles and …

  • I’ve been nominated for an award
It came as a happy surprise when this year’s Queer Indie nominations were announced a few weeks ago. I wasn’t expecting it at all. Everyone says, it’s enough to just be nominated and as wonderful as that is, of course I want to win. Everyone yearns to be validated and recognised for their hard work.
  • When Inspiration Strikes
We writers, write. It’s what we do. Sometimes, we have to sit at our computers and notepads and push ourselves to write something, other times, we are guided by our inspiration. Inspiration can strike at any time, in any form, so it’s always handy to have something nearby to write on. For me, it’s either my phone’s notepad or my computer. I used to write in a physical notepad, but I find my brain works …

  • You (probably) Need an Editor
I have been reading a book recently that has clearly never been anywhere near an editor, or a beta reader or even Grammarly. The formatting is wrong – it’s double spaced after every paragraph. There are multiple spelling, grammar and punctuation mistakes – even some of the tenses used are wrong. There are four main characters, three of them have names starting with the letter M. This is fiction, the author could have called them …
