The Tao of Pain

A poem by Terry Gee

Pain is a papercut at work

Pain is stubbing your big toe
Pain is falling over
And landing on your elbow
Pain is losing a friend
Or watching a loved one die
Pain is a broken heart
Where all you can do is cry
Pain is baking a cake
And burning your hand on the tray
Pain is eating too much
And seeing how much you weigh
Pain is a chronic illness
One with constant pain
When not being able to sit or sleep or walk
Is slowing driving you insane
Pain is everywhere
It is with us all
And no pain is greater than yours
There is no big and small

Pain is usually fleeting
In a flash the pain is gone
For others it’s a constant companion
They can’t switch it off and on
When pain killers stop working
When laying down only makes it worse
Pain is a pain that just won’t quit
And every day feels like a curse
Pain is painful
Whenever it strikes
But pain is not invincible
We must never stop the fight
Pain just is
