As a gay man, I obviously want to see more television geared towards me and I thought this would be the case for most of the LBGT community – but apparently not.
Looking was damned by so many of my friends who said it was boring. For me, it showed a true depiction of gay life in San Francisco. There are so many successful soap operas world-wide that focus (sometimes daily) on the everyday grind of normal life that are watched by millions. Looking was the nearest the gay community has ever gotten to something similar – and after only two seasons, it was cancelled. This was not boring television, but a snapshot of a small group of gay friends going about their lives.
A great script performed by a superb cast with the backdrop of the gay centre of the world – this should have worked and I’m really stumped as to why it didn’t. Maybe we (the gay community) are not ready for a mainstream gay TV show/soap?
I for one will miss Looking. I have been to San Francisco many times, I have friends there and this really was a good reflection of life there. HBO has announced a feature-length episode to tie off the storylines – which is great, but this show was cut short far too early.
